Choose your OS
Picking your OS will quickly reduce the options you have. The two main platforms to consider are Windows and Mac OS X. Preferences between the two will be for completely different reasons from one business to the next so make sure you focus entirely on your own business needs.
How much travelling do people within your company do? Obviously this willy vary depending on job role. Generally speaking, 11-13 inch models are preferred by those constantly on the go but for those who spend more time at a desk a 15 or 17-inch model might be better. It is important to make sure individuals can be productive in their job, it sounds silly but screen size is a big deal when it comes to this.
Now for the geeky bit...
As far as the processor (CPU) goes, the number of cores and GHz clock speed is the primary driver of performance. For most people, the quicker the laptop the better.
Make sure you have enough space. When memory gets full that's when you run into performance problems and productivity will slow down.
How much data do your staff need to store? The Cloud and backup services that are available to us today help reduce our reliance on local storage, but it is important for people to be able to make copies if required.
Other things to consider...
Battery life - deal breaker depending on job role, location and amount of time spent off-site.
Reviews - read them. Don't rely on what you've heard on the grapevine, do your research.
Ports - how many accessories or external monitors need to be connected?
Budget - essential and can make all the difference as to what options you have to start with.
